The book tells the story of Samoset, a sagamore of the Wawenock (also called Wawenock Abenaki) people from the Pemaquid area (present-day coastal Maine).

It frames his 1621 encounter with colonists at Plymouth as part of a much larger narrative: his home territory, his people’s culture, and the profound changes brought by European-Indigenous contact.
