Averill, Phil. Woodstoves and Backhouses: Schoolhouses of Bristol, Maine, 1800-2000 (Bristol: self-published, 2001)

This compact and richly informative book chronicles the one-room schoolhouses of the town of Bristol, Maine over two centuries—covering the years 1800 through 2000.

With historical photographs and narratives, the author traces how these humble institutions evolved from wood-stove heated buildings (“woodstoves”) with outhouses (“backhouses”) into the modern educational facilities of the twentieth century. The images and descriptions reflect not only the physical structures, but also the community life, teaching practices, and rural heritage of the region. According to a local history article, Averill’s book contains “images and descriptions of different buildings throughout the town that were once a school house.”
